Downtown Cheyenne Clean-up Project


July 12, 2006 -Cheyenne, WY... The historic Plains Hotel has spearheaded a beautification project for downtown Cheyenne called, "Pick It Up in Downtown Cheyenne", based on the slogan “Kick It Up in Downtown Cheyenne” introduced in 2004.  A group of downtown volunteers will come together for their clean-up assignments on Friday, July 14 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.  The project will focus on the core area of downtown Cheyenne and along the Frontier Days Parade route.  The Plains Hotel is working with the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and the Downtown Cheyenne Merchants Association (DCMA) to get the job done.  This coincides with the “Clean and Safe” initiative, a downtown cleanliness and maintenance crew that is funded by the Downtown Development Authority and managed by the City of Cheyenne. 

Garry Sullivan, The Plains Hotel General Manager explains, "The mission of the historic Plains Hotel is to be a responsible citizen in the downtown community and to maintain the western spirit of neighbors helping neighbors. This is where we work and live so the Plain’s employees, along with Clean and Safe, DDA, and DCMA, want to show their hospitality to visitors from around the world."

The project is multi-faceted to include general maintenance and improving the appearance of the downtown commercial corridor.  The street level of the Hynds Building will be refreshed with colorful banners hung along the display windows.  An 88-foot DDA banner depicting bold graphics that say "Shop-Dine-Stay-Kick Back!" will also be displayed on the vacant lot next to Wyoming Home.  A portion of the Old Towne Mall at Carey Avenue and Lincolnway will be enhanced with newly mulched beds and planted with flowers and shrubs.  In addition, the City of Cheyenne has committed to reconstructing curbs and brickwork in the area.

"This broad-based clean-up effort is the perfect compliment to the beautification and economic development programs that the DDA, City and business and property owners have been working to implement”, says Christian Cherek, Executive Director of the Downtown Development Authority. “There has been more than $50 million of public/private investment in downtown in the last 5 years.  We want that investment to sparkle for our visitors.”
